Portland

On July 5, 2011, we drove up to Portland, Maine for the day with our friends Eitan and Julia. These photos are from that trip. The morning bun I mentioned yesterday was breakfast. Dinner was a warm mushroom salad, among other wonderful things, at a restaurant called Fore Street. Lunch was I don't remember what or where, but next time, because Andrew said so, will be one of Stephen Lanzalotta's Sicilian-style slabs at Micucci Grocery Co. I hope next time comes soon.

p.s. - For all you Mia addicts out there, HERE you go.

I knew where you were eating before I even got to the bottom paragraph. Fore Street! I love that restaurant! It was one of our favorites when we went to Maine a few years ago. Your pictures do it proud, Jess. Lovely.

Aha, now we know the story behind the face behind the ice cream cone that pops up on the header every once in a while. As one of many Mia addicts, I love the video!

Shanna - We had such a wonderful meal there. I was super pregnant with Mia at the time and just beginning to really think about what life would look like a little down the road. I relished that loooong leisurely meal with our friends so much.

Gayle - Ah yes, that ice cream cone. We had plumb crumble at Fore Street, and something chocolate, I think, and maybe even another dessert among the four of us, but that ice cream cone is what Eitan wanted to end on. As you can see, he's quite pleased.

Ooh, Jess, hooray for Portland! Micucci's is a great shop; my parents still go there when they need to stock up on Italian ingredients. It's also a place of family lore - when my sister was 3 she RAN out the front door of the shop and into the street. I only have vague memories of it (I was 5), but my mom still gets heart palpitations when she talks about it.

That movie is awesome :) Thanks for feeding the need!

And yes, oh my, I've never been to Standard (must fix that), but the book has me swooning, and I've only had it a week. Oh, the chocolate cookies....

Adrienne! You were the one who recommended Fore Street to us, of course. I should have mentioned that. Thanks again, and again and again! That story about your sister - yikes. I think I have different eyes for a story like that now that I'm a mama myself. My palms broke out into a sweat just reading it. Pffff...

Molly, I'm so glad that you and this book have found each other. A most excellent match. "Must fix that," as in, must journey east for an all-around New England visit, yes? YES??

Jess,

I love Portland so much, sometimes I can't stand it. These photos made me yearn to return ASAP. Thanks for the great Micucci's reminder- I have heard many good things about it but seem to always be right in that area after they've closed for the day (this happens when you frequent the area for Duckfat sandwiches while you're on your way further north).

Also: MIA? She is the cutest. Loved that video.

I meant to comment on this as soon as I read it but, quite clearly, forgot! We spent two nights with friends in Portland in June and loved seeing a little bit of Maine. On the first night we ate at Fore Street, I had the mussels and they were so good. I want to go back and spend more time on the Maine coast now.
